I arrived from the east coast to Santa Fe, New Mexico in July of 1990, with a background in fine art, decorative art and fresco painting.
What drew me to the Southwest is what inevitably draws so many artists: light, earth, sky, wide-open spaces. Another world. A spirit of wildness, close and intimate. A different writing of history, different ways of walking, seeing and living in the world. Paintings on walls, rocks, nichos. Adobe mixed with straw. Plastered walls by women’s hands on the exterior of homes and churches.
It was my good fortune to meet three significant New Mexican artists when beginning my life here: Frederico Vigil, Allan Houser and Bill Lumpkins. Each person had their personal roots to a life lived in New Mexico. I began listening to their stories, introducing me to individual landscapes of New Mexico. Bill introduced me to my first clients in Santa Fe and my art work began to shift and expand influenced by a sense of place.
My painting shifts from interior surfaces to the canvas and back again, each informing the other.
I like the relationship of land and dwelling and exploring current expressions that relate to the integrity of past material, location and culture and bringing them into the future.
Color, light, texture and design are at play in my work.
